A FATHER'S HOPE

Francisco Cinco, Jr. is a husband and a father who only wants a better life for his small family.

He is a casual laborer struggling to make ends meet with his meager 200-Peso-a-day salary. His wife Rosanna is a house-helper who earns P3000 a month.

They have two beautiful girls, seven-year old Julia and four-year old Jenrose. Both daughters are already studying.

Francisco and his family currently occupy a small house in Poblacion, Javier town in Leyte, after super typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) swept through the province in November 2013. The house — more like a room — was partially damaged by the storm, but it suffered a better fate that the Cinco’s original home, which was totally blown away by the strong winds. BUILDING BACK BETTER

The town of Burauen in Leyte, some two hours away from Tacloban City, is no stranger to strong typhoons and floods.

On November 5, 1991, the town was submerged by Tropical Storm Thelma (Uring), leaving around 27,000 homes damaged or destroyed. It was considered one of the deadliest storms in recent Philippine history, surpassed only by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) exactly 22 years and 3 days later.

The Buranday family experienced both storms.

Marifel Buranday is a wife, and a mother of three children. Her husband, Rito, used to be a coconut farmer before Haiyan destroyed most of the coconut plantations in the area. See more http://habitat.org.ph/news-and-events/stories/125-story-building-back-better
