Groundbreaking and brick-laying activity in Sta. Fe, bantayan Island, Cebu led by Habitat for Humanity Philippines Chief Operating Officer Leonilo 'Tots' Escalada and Sta. Fe, Bantayan Mayor Jose Esgana last February 10, 2014.

Dear Habitat donors, supporters, and friends,

This February 16 marks the 100th day since the world’s strongest typhoon to have ever hit land. Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda), which wreaked unprecedented havoc on the central provinces of the Philippines, left more than 6,000 dead and 2,000 missing. Super Typhoon Yolanda also caused a tragedy that continues to inflict millions of Filipinos to this day – it destroyed 1.1 million homes, half a million of which are beyond repair.

Half a million displaced families. Adults, children, elders, and persons with disabilities and special needs still huddled together in scores of cramped and unsanitary evacuation centers and temporary shelters. 100 days after the most tragic day of their lives.

But thanks to you, Habitat for Humanity Philippines has been able to accomplish the following 100 days after Yolanda:

• Repaired more than 12,000 damaged houses through its Shelter Repair Kit (SRK) assistance. The number of families who were able to return to their own previously destroyed homes is already 40% of Habitat’s total target to assist 30,000 families through SRKs.

• Distributed 5,000 Emergency Shelter Repair Kits (ESKs). Habitat distributed the ESKs in Northern Cebu, particularly in Bantayan Island and its nearby islets, Daang Bantayan, and Guian immediately in the aftermath of Yolanda. Habitat assisted those areas because, like the other remote areas that were equally devastated by Yolanda, they were inaccessible and would most likely not get urgent help from most government and private aid agencies.

• Habitat will soon build its first 1,000 super typhoon and earthquake resistant houses. The bulk of its initial house construction efforts will be in Barangay Kawayan Tacloban City, where the local government, the National Housing Authority and Habitat have signed an agreement to build 852 houses. Habitat has also formalized with local and national government authorities, aid agencies and corporate donors to build houses for Yolanda displaced families in Cullion, Palawan and Northern Cebu, including the so-called “French Village” in Daang Bantayan, because it is being supported by French companies in the Philippines.

The Yolanda rebuilding efforts is a long process and according to even the more optimistic estimates, will take at least three years. Because of the great need – and also due to your inspiring support – Habitat has made a commitment build 30,000 homes to this effort. Together, we are turning this tragedy into opportunity by building safe, decent, and permanent homes and eliminating poverty housing in the country.

In behalf families we serve, please accept our heartfelt thank You! We couldn’t have gone this far without you.

Sincerely,

Your Habitat Family
