Habitat Rebuild Philippines Update

Life after Haiyan

“Homeless, hungry, and jobless” read an article referring to the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan six months after. Haiyan (local name Yolanda) is known to be the strongest typhoon to ever hit the Philippines.

While sad stories continue to make headlines, Habitat for Humanity endeavors to create stories of hope for affected families.

And 59-year-old Opelia’s story is one of those.

Opelia still vividly recalls how she and 12 other family members narrowly escaped death. As their house started collapsing and water continued to rise, Opelia, her husband Mario, their children and grandchildren had to climb over a wall to seek shelter at a neighbor’s house. Here, they prayed hard for their lives to be spared.

After the storm, Opelia’s house was far from livable; her family had to stay in a tent for shelter. Just when they had nowhere to go, help arrived. Thankfully, Opelia was one of thousands in Daanbantayan, Cebu who received Shelter Repair Kits (SRK) from Habitat for Humanity. Little by little they worked to repair their house back to normal using the lumber, iron sheets, and tools from the Habitat repair kit. Soon, the entire family moved back in.

Having a decent home back was the breakthrough Opelia and her family needed to start moving forward from the horrors of the tragedy. Today, six months after Haiyan, Mario has stopped fishing because he hardly catches anything after the typhoon. He now works as a laborer, while Opelia accepts laundry work to augment their income.

To date, Habitat has distributed over 17,000 SRK’s across areas in Cebu, Western and Eastern Samar, and Leyte. Habitat is also building typhoon-resistant houses for survivors in Northern Cebu, Leyte, Palawan, and Negros Occidental, Capiz, and Iloilo. As the country slowly shows signs of recovery, Habitat knows its work is far from over. It targets to build a total of 30,000 houses, turning this tragedy into an opportunity to help eliminate poverty housing.

Shelter remains to be one of the biggest concerns in areas hardest hit by Typhoon Haiyan. Months have passed and countless families are still housed in tents and makeshift homes. You can help give them their hope and dignity back by supporting Habitat today.
