My dear friend,
12 May 2008 is a day that I would always remember. On that day, I have just finished my HKCEE exams, getting ready for a fun holiday ahead. Then I saw on the news - a 8.0 earthquake had just happened in SiChuan, with millions of people dying and houses torn down. Seeing the homeless, helpless people on the TV, I asked myself - What can I do for these people?
Then, now in 2012, I finally see the chance for me to help these people in Sichuan. 4 years have passed in a blink of an eye - probably many of us may have forgotten about the earthquake, thinking that normal lives have been resumed among the Sichuan people. However, from the updates from Habitat for Humanities, we see that most people are still living in insecured houses built out of mud, with bad living conditions, which do not have enough protection against future earthquakes. Their sanitations and water supply are also poorly constructed. In response to this, I have decided to participate in Habitat for Humanities' volunteering program, in which we would build disease resillient houses and improve living conditions for the families in poverty in Sichuan.
I am by no means a well-trained construction worker nor civil engineer; however, I truly believe my steps to Sichuan would be valuable as I have the heart to serve. I hope that the families in poverty in Sichuan would feel our love for them through our action. Laying bricks and mixing cement may be only part of the construction process; but it is for sure a step I wish to take to embrace these people and improve their living conditions.
I also believe that this trip would be a life-changing experience for me - as I would have a chance to step into these people's shoes and experience what they are suffering from. I hope that through this I would be able to understand their difficulties, and know how to embrace them.
In order to cover the expenses for the building materials and the volunteering arrangements, I would need to raise about $5000 HKD (in which the majority would be going in for the building project).
