In early February 2012, on a routine Friday, I came to Sun House at Hong Kong Island with teammates for the preparation of Hult Global Case Challenge regional contest. The best we were expecting was that the managing director of Habitat for Humanity China Ltd, Kai Chuen Yim, could provide us a general operational framework for us to proceed with this case competition, which was to design a solution to help their international office build or improve 10 million homes in 10 years to help 50 million people. What we didn't anticipate was that when we stepped into the 17th floor and met with Mr. Yim, we were totally immersed in the atmosphere of these one-floor offices. Helen and Sandra introduced us to Mr. Yim while the Managing Director did introduced their formation, expansion, operations for building and improving “normal houses” as well as post-earthquake reconstruction projects in Sichuan. They built and improved around 3500 homes across villages in China in a decade, and the confidence Mr. Yim presented to us really touched and motivated us to carry this case competition forward.
Weeks later, in late February, we lost the competition in Shanghai with an unfinished dream of making a real impact on our country, and the world. After came back school, I decided not to sit in library discussion room for dreaming of becoming a good person anymore, so I joined YouthBuild project for making a real contribution. Afterward I tried to raise fund for Shuiweidong people, where in May 110 families will be helped by 250 volunteers and their fund, sweet and dedication. I tried to advocate awareness in a conference, but only to find that as long as the theme for discussion was not about philanthropy, it is difficult to raise enough interest among busy participants for Habitat for Humanity. I believe here online is different, in the virtual community, information and awareness can be shared quickly, while I believe with all your kind and generosity, we will raise the HK$ 3,880,000 in need, we will bring hope to 110 families, and we will make this community sustainable in the future.
