I live in a big house in Singapore - myself and two dogs. I have a basement entertainment room, too many bedrooms, a roof deck etc etc - you get the picture? I live a very comfortable life, but I'm always concious of those who don't.
Three weeks ago I had the idea that I needed to volunteer more of my time to help people less fortunate than me and I started searching for what I could do. I've always been interested in Habitat For Humanity but quite frankly my DIY skills suck; one anecdote I remember was changing lightbulbs in Houston - needed to call a handyman to repeai the light fittings after I'd finished - my excuse... "who would put a light fitting in such a difficult to reach place??"
So here I am, heading to Nepal to help build thirty homes. I'm kinda hoping my role will be limited to mixing cement (that I can do), or carrying the lumber for the professionals. I'm very excited to be part of this project - October can't come soon enough!
I've donated $3,000 of my own money to this and looking for any and all contributions to go along with this. Please be generous with your donations. For those of you who remember my efforts in the NY Marathon a couple of years ago - I won't be building dressed as a hot dog!!
I'll link this to my facebook and plan to tweet on the progress - follow me on ponnoiyee if you have nothing better to do ;)
thanks you all
Matthew
