Transforming unsafe housing in Shuiweidong Village
YouthBUILD China will take place in Shuiweidong, a small rural farming village in Conghua district, of Guangdong province. Many families here live in primitive and unsafe houses with mud walls. Many share their homes with their livestock. There is no proper sanitation or ventilation. Not only are the structures uncomfortable and unhygienic, they are also vulnerable to regular flooding from typhoons.
The local government is providing families with a subsidy to build new houses. But, real construction costs are high and families in Shuiweidong cannot afford to build even with the subsidy.
On May 12th, 250 Habitat for Humanity volunteers will help transform mud homes into safe home homes for up to 110 families. Other improvements to transform the community include access to drinking water, decent sewage and drainage and proper roads.
